Singing sensation Zubeen Garg – a vocal critic of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) – once again grabbed the headlines after veteran Congress leader and former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi proposed his name for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections.

The biennial elections of 55 members of Rajya Sabha from 17 states will be held on March 26th, 2020. The counting of votes will also take place the same day. The members will retire in April 2020.

“I too have heard about it. Let’s see…let’s see. I will not say anything about it now,” Zubeen said. He added, “Our protests (against CAA) are going one…let’s see. I have not decided anything yet.”

Addressing a presser in Guwahati on February 27th, 2020, Gogoi said that he will support candidates like Zubeen, Assamese actress Barsha Rani Bishaya and eminent lawyer Arup Borbora for the Rajya Sabha elections.

In Assam, the three seats are going to the polls. Two seats are vacated by Congress MPs who switched to BJP – Bhubaneswar Kalita and Sanjay Sinh. The third seat would fall vacant when Bodoland People’s Front, an ally of the BJP in Assam, Biswajit Daimary retires on April 9th, 2020.

Zubeen had earlier said that the CAA protests have been suspended in the state due to the ongoing HSLC and HS examinations. The protests will resume once the examinations are over.

The singer had vehemently criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party including Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal for supporting the ‘anti-Assam’ CAA. He had accused Sonowal of betraying the people of Assam by maintaining “stoic silence” and “surrendering to the BJP” over the CAA.

Last year, Zubeen had written to the Chief Minister over the Citizenship Amendment Bill and demanded that the votes the BJP got using an election song sung by him in 2016 be ‘returned’. In a Facebook post, the singer also offered to return the remuneration received for the song.

Zubeen has been actively taking part in the anti-CAA protests and to register his resentment, the singer has recently launched a website ‘Assam Against CAA.
