Kaziranga: A fear psychosis has gripped the residents of Harmati located in Kaziranga on July 18th, 2019 after a Royal Bengal Tiger entered a house and was seen relaxing on the bed of the man identified as Rafikul Islam.

As per reports, the tiger had strayed from the nearby Kaziranga National Park which is submerged under floodwaters. Animals residing in the park are taking shelter in the highlands within the park and many are migrating to the southern highlands of Karbi Anglong crossing the National Highway 37, including in human settlements.

A local said, “The tiger entered the house of Rafikul at around 7 am and is currently relaxing on his bed. We haven’t seen a tiger for years now. We are extremely scared and sad as well. Over 95 per cent of the park is submerged under flood waters leaving the animals homeless forcing them to look for refuge in human habitations. ”

Meanwhile, veterinarian Dr Samshul Ali and his team are on their way to tranquilise the big cat. The forest officials have also arrived and preparations are going on in full swing to relocate the tiger to a safer place.

Spread across the floodplains of the Brahmaputra river, the Park is home to the world’s largest population of Indian one-horned rhinos. The animals in the sanctuary are suffering terribly due to the incessant rains and floods. The park, which is World Heritage Site, is bound to the north by the Brahmaputra river and has highland areas in its south.

Pankaj Bora, Bagori Range Officer said, “At present, we are not disturbing the tiger but monitoring its movement. The villagers are cooperating with the officials to create a safe environment for the big cat.”
