Use Of Assamese Language Made Mandatory In All Educational Institutions Of Guwahati

Guwahati: The Kamrup metropolitan district administration on July 31st, 2019 directed all privately-owned educational institutions of Guwahati to allow the use of Assamese language alongside English language.

The move which was proposed by the Assam Sahitya Sabha(ASS) has been issued by the inspector of schools following a directive from the Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup(Metro), Biswajit Pegu.

In addition to this the ASS has given all the privately-owned educational institutions of Guwahati including Don Bosco, Saint Mary’s a time frame of 7 days to replace their signboards written only in English with additional use of Assamese.

“Teachers should make use of Assamese language as a medium of instruction alongside English. For those teachers who are unfamiliar with the Assamese language, Asom Sahitya Sabha will take up the responsibility to teach them,” said Paramananda Rajbongshi, ASS President while addressing a presser here.

Rajbongshi also urged the schools to adopt the Assam Official Language Act.

The official order also instructed all commercial, semi-commercial and private institutions to make use of the Assamese in their hoardings and signboards.
