In yet another incident of firing, bike-borne unidentified persons fired shots in the air, next to the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protest site outside Jamia Millia Islamia University. This is the third such incident in four days at an anti-CAA protest in the capital.

The incident took place outside the Jamia Millia Islamia University’s Gate No. 5 on the night of February 2nd, 2020. No one was injured in the firing.

The protesters said that two persons, one of them wearing a red jacket, came on a scooter and opened fire outside Gate No. 5, 2 km from Shaheen Bagh. Delhi Police are yet to make any arrests in the latest incident of firing at Jamia.

People in small groups have been gathering around the varsity gates at night to protest against the controversial CAA. In several mobile videos tweeted by people at the university gate, people could be seen running for cover under the dim glow of streetlights after hearing the alleged gunshot.

Police said that an FIR has been registered. “CCTV footage will be collected from Gate No 5 and 7. Adequate actions will be taken,” police said. Delhi Police are yet to make any arrests in the latest incident of firing at Jamia.

On February 1st, 2020, just three days after a teen fired shot at protesters at Jamia Millia University, another man fired shots standing near police barricades put up at Shaheen Bagh. He was overpowered by the locals and handed over to police.

The man has been identified as 24-year-old Kapil Gujjar. He came from the Jasola side and shot in the air. While being taken away by police, Kapil chanted Jai Shree Ram and shouted Sirf Hinduon ka raj chalega (only Hindus will rule).

On January 30th, 2020, a video clip of a man, later said to be 17 and a juvenile, brandishing his gun and open firing at the crowd standing meters away from dozens of policemen deployed outside the Jamia Millia University on January 30th, 2020 sent shockwaves across the country.

The teen shooter was also heard saying: “Humare desh mein sirf Hinduon ki chalegi aur kisi ki nahi (in our country only Hindus will prevail).” He had allegedly come to the area in an auto.

The firings have taken place in quick succession after the controversial slogans of ‘Goli Maaro Sa***n Ko (shoot the traitors)’ were chanted at a Delhi campaign rally of Anurag Thakur, Union Minister of State for Finance. Thakur was later banned from campaigning in Delhi for three days by the Election Commission of India.
