Two GRP Men Held For Gang-Raping Mizo Girl In Silchar

Over 6,500 rape cases were registered in Assam during the last three and a half years


Two GRP personnel were arrested for allegedly gang-raping Mizo girl in Silchar Railway Station.

The girl was allegedly gang-raped by GRP constables Sharif Uddin Barbhuiya and Uttam Das when she had gone to the railway station with her boyfriend on January 8th, 2020.

The girl alleged that the constables accosted them and took them to a place near the GRP outpost and raped her. An FIR under IPC Sections 376D, 385, 342 and 376C was registered at Silchar Sadar police station on January 8th, 2020.

After the FIR was lodged, the Silchar police went to the railway station with the girl where she identified the accused constables.

The arrested constables have been sent to 14-day judicial custody on January 10th, 2020.

It may be noted, over 6,500 rape cases were registered in Assam during the last three and a half years. A report published by the National Crime Records Bureau stated that a total of 23,082 out of 3,59,849 cases of crime against women were registered in Assam in 2017, is 6.4 per cent of the total crimes in the country.
