Two Assam Govt Employees Arrested On Bribery Charges

Both the accused officials will be forwarded to the Court of Special Judge, Guwahati today


The sleuths of Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption have arrested two Public Health Engineering Department(PHED) officials deployed at North Lakhimpur on charges of accepting a bribe.

The duo was nabbed based on a trap laid against them on the matter of a complaint registered at the ACB PS Case No. 15/2019 dated November 16th, 2019 under section 7(a) of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988(as amended 2018).

As per the trap, both the accused officials identified as Sr. Assistant Rohini Gogoi(57) and Accounts Officer Ajit Sonowal(54), was caught red-handed accepting the bribe amount of Rs. 50,000 from the complainant Makhan Saikia by the V&AC team. The bribe money was later seized from the possession of the accused.

According to the complainant his father Tularam Saikia, a grade IV employee of the said office had retired from his service on March 3rd, 2017 and was allegedly harassed and denied of his leave salary by the accused Rohini Gogoi for nonpayment of bribe. Saikia claimed that his father died on February 2nd, 2018 without even receiving the retirement benefits and later when he approached the office, the accounts officer allegedly harassed him enhancing the demand to Rs. 1 lakh.

Later the victim registered a complaint with the V&AC and accordingly an investigation was initiated and both the accused were arrested on November 19th, 2019. They will be forwarded to the Court of Special Judge, Guwahati today.
