Knowingly or unknowingly we have violated traffic rules multiple times and we tend to ignore them. But now, with the introduction of e-challan notice, we can keep a check on your acts. Now, an e-challan will be generated whenever you violate a traffic rule, like wrong parking, speeding and so on.

The e-challan is a Digital Traffic/Transport Enforcement Solution by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Through this initiative, an e-challan notice is sent to a person who violated a traffic rule through an SMS on their mobile phones. A physical format of the notice will be sent at the registered residential address.

But, what happens when you delete the SMS by mistake or you don’t receive the notice on your address? Well, nothing to worry as you can still check you challan status online and pay accordingly.

You need to pay your challan amount during a time period of 60 days from the date of issue of the notice. Also, if you have violated any traffic rule before September 2019, you will receive a notice under Motor Vehicle (MV) Act, 1988.

In such cases, you will have to pay the penalty amount applicable prior September 2019. However, if you get a notice for any traffic offence made on or after September 2019, you will need to pay as per the new MV act, 2019.

It may be mentioned, under the new MV act, 2019 penalties for violating traffic rules have increased.

To pay your challan amount online, here’s a step-by-step guide –

• Step one includes visiting the Digital Traffic/Transport Enforcement Solution website – https://echallan.parivahan.gov.in. Later, you need to click on the option ‘Check Challan Status’.

• After clicking the above-mentioned tab, you need to enter your challan number, vehicle number or Driving License number to check the status of your challan. Enter all the details along with the captcha and then, click on ‘Get Details’.

• Coming to the third step, the details of the status of your challan will be displayed below the row of the ‘Get Details’ tab. The row will remain blank if no challan is found.

• You can also track the number of challans issued against you for violating traffic rules. If you have violated any, the challans will start popping in the challan status row. Here comes the step of paying money online under the ‘Payment Option’. Under this option, you need to select the option ‘Pay Now’ to complete the other steps.

• Select the mode of payment – credit/debit card or Net Banking. Once, your payment is successful, you will receive a ‘Payment Successful’ message along with the transaction ID. Also, save the transaction ID for future use.

So, the next time when you violate a traffic rule, you know where to head to.
