West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said she asked the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to rethink the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the National Population Register (NPR).
Banerjee met Modi at Raj Bhavan in Kolkata on January 11th, 2020. The Chief Minister said she told Modi that West Bengal is “unhappy” about CAA and NRC.
Modi and Banerjee met amidst ongoing protests across the city against the controversial CAA. The politically significant meeting comes at a time when Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress is vehemently opposing the CAA, and the BJP pressing for its implementation.
Modi will be in Kolkata on January 11th-12th, 2020. He is scheduled to attend the function marking the 150th anniversary of Kolkata Port Trust on January 12th, 2020 and other programmes.
The PM will also inaugurate a light and sound show at Rabindra Setu, popularly known as Howrah Bridge.
