Amid widespread protest and criticism over the removal of the Special Protection Group(SPG) from the Gandhi family, Former Chief Minister of Assam and veteran Congress leader came down heavily against the incumbent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government.
Taking a jibe at the “sudden step”, Gogoi tweeted, “Removal of SPG from Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi exposes the vindictiveness of the BJP Govt. Everybody knows Indiraji was assassinated and later Rajivji was also assassinated due to withdrawal of security cover. Today we don’t understand why all of a sudden such step is being taken.”
It may be mentioned that the Modi-led government recently downgraded the security cover of Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi. They will reportedly continue to have Z-plus security cover which will consist of the Central Reserve Police Force commandos. The decision to remove the security cover came after reviewing threat inputs.
While talking about the removal of the VVIP security cover of NSG commandos, Gogoi further tweeted, “The same was the case with me when my NSG cover was withdrawn while Prafulla Kumar Mahanta and some other leaders are still under NSG cover.”
After the BJP came into power in Assam way back in 2016, the Centre pulled out Gogoi’s security cover. The Congress leader in the meantime continued to have Z-plus security cover.
On the other hand, expressing resentment on Centre’s move over the SPG removal, APCC President Ripun Bora announced to hold a demonstration infront of the Raj Bhawan in Guwahati on November 11th, 2019 and further said that they will send a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Ram Nath Kovind.
