Tarun Gogoi Questions CM Sonowal Over Transfer Of Prateek Hajela

Government should not release Prateek Hajela until his replacement is appointed: Tarun Gogoi

Former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on October 22nd, 2019 said that the state government should not release the state coordinator for National Register of Citizens (NRC) Prateek Hajela until his replacement is appointed.

“Why has the government released Hajela? The government should not release Hajela until his replacement is appointed. Government is doing the NRC work; not the Supreme Court,” the three-time CM Gogoi said. He further urged the state government to appeal the apex court to halt Hajela’s transfer to Madhya Pradesh.

On October 18th, 2019, the top court directed the central and the state government to transfer Hajela to Madhya Pradesh on deputation for a maximum period. However, the SC did not cite any reason behind his transfer order.

Besides, talking about the NRC, which was released on August 31st, 2019, the octogenarian leader said that the ‘register will betray the Bengali community’. He appealed the ethnic organisations of the state including the All Assam Students’ Union to stand in unison and raise voice for the protection of the greater Assamese community.

On October 14th, 2019, the All Assam Bengali Youth Students’ Federation claimed the exclusion of over 13 lakh people belonging to the Bengali community from the final NRC list. The final list included a total of 3,11,21,004 people and excluded 19,06,657 people including who did not submit claims.
