In wake of non-stop protests against the amended citizenship law, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has intensified its massive outreach programme over the contentious legislation.
The BJP has released a toll-free number on January 2nd, 2020 where people can give a missed call and register their support to the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
According to a tweet from the party’s official handle, the number is 88662 88662.
The BJP has launched a massive public awareness campaign on social media to reach out to the citizens and dispel their doubts on the issue. The saffron party blamed the Congress and “urban naxals” of spreading lies and rumours about the act, specially among the Muslim people.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 30th, 2019 initiated a campaign in support of the controversial CAA.
“#IndiaSupportsCAA because CAA is about giving citizenship to persecuted refugees & not about taking anyone’s citizenship away,” read a tweet from the official account of Prime Minister’s personal website.
After the Rajya Sabha passed the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill on December 11th, 2019, massive protests erupted in the country. In Assam, rail stations, panchayat office, a post office, a bank, a bus terminus, shops, several vehicles and other public properties have either been set ablaze or ransacked.
The streets of Assam, specially the Guwahati-Shillong Road, turned into a veritable battle zone littered with burnt tyres, logs, stones, rubber pellets and teargas shells as seething protesters mostly students descended on the streets opposing the Bill. Four people have been killed in police firing so far, while an oil tanker driver was charred to death when his vehicle was set on fire in Orang.
