Guwahati Police is likely to take action as Congress leader in Assam on December 3rd, 2019 slit his palm inside the Legislative Assembly to protest against the government move to privatise Cachar Paper Mill at Panchgram in Barak Valley and Nagaon Paper Mill at Jagiroad.

Rupjoti Kurmi, Congress legislator from Mariani constituency, slit the palm of his left hand with a blade and wrote slogans on a white paper to protest against the state government’s purported move to privatise the two paper mills.

Speaking to Time8, Guwahati police commissioner Deepak Kumar said, “Our officers are coordinating with the Speaker of the House. We are waiting for the order.”

Kurmi walked out of the Floor of the House, sat at the entrance and cut his palm with a blade to write slogans against the Assam government’s purported move to sell Brahmaputra Valley Fertilizer Corporation Limited ( Namrup Fertilizer Complex), Halmari Tea Estate in Dibrugarh and Ailabari tea estate in Karimganj.

Both the paper mills which were making profits in the past have been non-functional since October 2015 and March 2017 respectively.

Meanwhile, Kurmi wrote to the Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly apologising for his actions.

“I believe in Gandhian ideology. I feel the way I protested was wrong. I could have taken other ways to protest,” the MLA wrote assuring that “such kind of protest won’t take in future”.
