Citizens’ Forum, Assam on March 18th, 2020, said that senior journalist Ajit Kumar Bhuyan has been elected to the Rajya Sabha at a very crucial time.

Bhuyan won the elections as a joint candidate of the Congress and the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF).

Former Congress MP Bhubaneswar Kalita, who joined the BJP last year, and Biswajit Daimary of the Bodoland Peoples’ Front (BPF), one of the allies of the saffron party, were the other two candidates from Assam. All the candidates won the elections uncontested.

Addressing a press conference here in Guwahati, Bhuyan thanked the perfume baron-cum-politician Badruddin Ajmal-led AIUDF for nominating him as a candidate to the Upper House.

“I had no such thoughts to become an MP. I never sought a ticket. I agreed to be a candidate of Congress and the AIUDF as both have vehemently opposed the Citizenship Amendment Act,” Bhuyan said. He further said that he had got a number of offers in 1993 to become an MP but did not heed any importance.
