
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on March 11th, 2020, finalised the name of former Congress MP Bhubaneswar Kalita as the candidate for the Rajya Sabha elections to be held on March 26th, 2020.
Kalita, who quit his party on August 5th, 2019, opposing the party’s stand towards national interest, joined the saffron party on August 9th, 2019.
Meanwhile, the Bodoland Peoples’ Front, an ally of the ruling BJP, nominated the name of the previous Rajya Sabha MP Biswajit Daimary as the candidate for the elections.
The elections for the will be held for three seats in Assam. The term of two Congress MPs – who switched to the BJP – whose term will end on April 9th, 2020, include Bhubaneswar Kalita and Sanjay Singh. Biswajit Daimary will also retire on the same day.
The elections will be held for 55 seats from 17 states. The last date of filing of nominations would be March 13th, 2020 and polling would be on March 26th, 2020, from 9 am to 4 pm.
The other states are Maharashtra, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Manipur Rajasthan and Meghalaya.
