Several videos are doing rounds in the social media of Assam police personnel beating up anti-CAA protesters in Nalbari district after they waved black flags at Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal’s convoy on January 1st, 2019.

It may be mentioned that the Chief Minister was travelling to the ashram of Krishnaguru in Barpeta district from Guwahati where he was shown black flags by the activists of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chhatra Parishad (AJYCP) for his stand on the enacted Citizenship Amendment Act(CAA).

In the videos, the security deployed at the area are seen chasing the protesters away as they baton charge them while Sonowal’s convoy passed through. The protesters also raised slogans against the new legislation and the government.

In another video, an unarmed protester is seen being dragged into a police vehicle as the protesters continue to raise slogans of ‘Joi Aai Axom’.

Post the viral videos reactions have started coming from all quarters addressing Sonowal as ‘villain of the community’. The Lakhimpur unit of the students union on January 2nd, 2020 staged a protest against the Assam police and the Chief Minister.

The students union workers burnt an effigy of Sonowal along the National Highway. Addressing Sonowal as ‘shameless’, the AASU activists asked the former to take action against the Assam Police.
