Road To Change: Plastic Waste Finds A New Purpose In Tura

Plastic wastes were re-used to construct an entire road in Tura town of Meghalaya and this initiative was taken under the Meghalaya Plastic Challenge

May be using plastics to bring a developmental change in the society was never given a thought. Well, the neighboring state of Meghalaya came up with an innovative idea of re-using plastic waste that too to construct an entire pucca road in the West Garo Hills(WGH) district of the state.

While plastic waste has been a global menace affecting the environmental conditions of the State, the Megahlaya Government found a solution to use the wastes in building out roads. Under the Meghalaya Plastic Challenge initiative launched by the Conrad Sangma led Meghalaya government, plastic wastes were re-used to construct an entire stretch of road in Tura town.

A video of the project was also shared by CMO Meghalaya on their official YouTube Channel on September 24th, 2019.

The WGH DC also appealed to all the citizens to collect plastics and give it to SBM coordinators in the villages in Tura.

All the localities, schools, VWSCs are requested to collect the plastic and handover to SBM Coordinators in the villages and TMB in Tura. Mega Drive for #MeghalayaPlasticChallenge Conrad Sangma

Calling this new initiative as the “road to change” the state government roped in volunteers to collect plastic waste from door to door in Tura. After collecting the plastic waste they were segregated, washed, dried, shredded and mixed into the bitumen used to construct roads making the newly constructed roads much more durable.

Giving a thumbs up to the initiative, compliments started pouring in from all quarters like “re-using plastics in this way is such a great initiative,” “Now travelling has become hassle-free for us” and many more.

It may be mentioned that the process to construct the road was completely eco-friendly and no new machinery was used.
