Ripun Bora Fires Salvo At Himanta, Demands Arrest

A team of the APCC led by Ripun Bora reached the Hailakandi district to sensitize the public excluded from Assam NRC

State Congress president Ripun Bora firing salvo at Assam Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma demanded that the latter should be put behind the bars for being ‘irresponsible’ and making ‘communal’ remarks instigating the public.

“He(Himanta Biswa Sarma) had recently made a communal remark that detention camps are for Muslims. This is a big statement to be said in the public by a law maker. He should be immediately arrested,” said Ripun Bora while addressing the media.

While talking about the implementation of Citizenship Amendment Bill, Bora added that it is a ‘lollipop’ doled by the incumbent BJP government to ‘fool’ the people of Assam and deprive them of their rights.

“The Citizenship Bill is nothing but a lollipop to fool the people of Assam and deprive them of their rights. They might think that they will be provided with land rights, jobs but these are all fictitious,” Bora added.

It may be mentioned that on September 23rd, 2019, Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill report will be tabled in the parliament in the month of December, 2019.

The Bill which evoked massive agitation in Assam including other Northeastern states seeks to grant Indian citizenship to the people belonging to the Hindus, Jains, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists and Parsis who have become the victims of religious persecution in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan and entered India on or before December 31st, 2014.

As a part of its NRC awareness drive, a team of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee(APCC) led by Ripun Bora reached the Hailakandi district yesterday. The team is slated to visit parts of the district for 3 days.

The APCC and Assam Congress Legislature Party jointly decided to form a high-level team of the APCC to sensitize the people excluded from the final list of the National Registrar of Citizens(NRC). The awareness tour was flagged off by former Chief Minister of Assam Tarun Gogoi on Septmber 13th, 2019.

“Post the publication of NRC, fear and uncertainty has engulfed the state. The general public is extremely scared and over these apprehensions we want to extend help to the people over the citizenship list,” added the Congress leader.
