Rendezvous with Avora Records: Strings in sync

Avora Records, a jazz and pop music band from Aizwal in Mizoram, has come a long way since they started.  Sushmita Dey catches up with this all-boy band which is creating the right buzz with their fun, upbeat music

The musical journey started way back in 2013 when a group of friends started hanging out in a studio. Soon they started jamming and went live in 2016 and have shown the crowd that they are here to stay.

Their upbeat J-Pop/rock and Indie music has struck the chord with the listeners over time. From performing at the Bacardi NH7 Weekender in Meghalaya to winning the Sennheiser Top 50 bands – the band is creating quite the rave.

In an interview with TIME8, the band mates of the Avora Records (AR) talk about boom of K-Pop, new album, Mizoram and all things musical.  Read on…

    • When did you form the band and how did you zero in on the name?

AR: The band was formed in 2016. Avora Records used to be the name of a studio where we all used to hangout. Later, we took up the name for our band.

    • Tell us something about your band members

AR: We have Stephen (vocals), Sanga (drums), CK (bass), Ruata (guitar), Khos (guitar). We believe we are all composers and critics as we write our own parts in all our songs as well as critique and challenge each other.

    • What makes your band different from others?

AR: Our chemistry. We can say with confidence that it is our chemistry and friendship on and off the stage. It really boosts our writing process and performances.

    • Your band recently won the Sennheiser Top 50 bands…

AR: Only one word can describe the feeling – Perfect.

    • Projects in the pipeline

AR: We are planning to release an album early this year. So hopefully, we’ll be touring the country with the album.

    • Who writes the lyrics?

AR:  Stephen, our vocalist, writes all the lyrics. He’s a bit of a theatrical romantic and that reflects a lot in his writings.

    • The songs are basically about…

AR: Life – as a whole.

    • K-pop music has become popular in the Northeast. Do you also seek inspiration from it?

AR: Absolutely. Pop culture, not just K-pop, has been and will always be a big influence and inspiration for us.

    • How’s the music scene today in Mizoram as compared to when you started…

AR: It’s growing here. With so many talented musicians here, we have full faith that in the next few years, it’ll be a lot better.

    • Any on stage funny experience…

AR: There are so many…Once, during a performance, we thought that Khos was so pumped up that he came over to Stephen and gave him a quick smooch and then casually just went back to playing his guitar.

    • Message for fans…

AR:  If you are reading this right now, stalk us on social media, slide in our DMs. Let’s plan a party or something so that we can tell you how thankful we are for your support. Cheers!
