Ahead of elections for the Rajya Sabha, the Congress in Assam is contemplating to forge an alliance with Badruddin Ajmal led All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF). The party is mulling to tie-up with the regional parties to keep the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at bay, as per reports.
The biennial elections of 55 members of Rajya Sabha from 17 states will be held on March 26th, 2020. The counting of votes will also take place the same day. The members will retire in April 2020.
The 17 states include Maharashtra, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Manipur Rajasthan and Meghalaya.
In Assam, the three seats are going to the polls. Two seats are vacated by Congress MPs who switched to BJP – Bhubaneswar Kalita and Sanjay Sinh. The third seat would fall vacant when Bodoland People’s Front, an ally of the BJP in Assam, Biswajit Daimary retires on April 9th, 2020.
The Assam Congress is mulling to put up a joint candidate of three parties, including Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), as per reports.
The Congress has 23 MLA while BJP has 60, AGP has 14 and the AIUDF 13 in the 126-member Assam Assembly. The Congress has 46 MPs in the Rajya Sabha while the BJP has 82 members.
