Promote Boat Racing To Create Awareness On Water Conservation: Sonowal Tells Youth

CM Sarbananda Sonowal urges the youth to use the boat racing sport to promote the heritage and protect the rich resources of Assam

Stressing on the importance of water conservation, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal urged the youths of Assam to promote boat racing, one of the oldest traditional sports.

Sonowal said that the boat racing can be a great platform to create awareness on water conservation in Assam. The Chief Minister on August 23rd, 2019, attended the Shri Krishan Janmasthami and 75th anniversary celebrations of Hitsadhani Library, Ulabori, a small hamlet in Nalbari district. A boat race was organised to mark the event.

“Boat-racing is a traditional sport of Assam and can be a great platform to create awareness on water conservation. I urge the youths to realise this opportunity and use the sport to promote our heritage and protect our rich resources,” he said.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also appealed to all people from all walks of life to create awareness on water conservation. In his first Mann Ki Baat radio programme after winning a second term, Modi appealed all to share knowledge of traditional methods of water conservation. The Prime Minister said that different methods may be adopted in different places to save water.

It may be mentioned that Meghalaya is the first state in the country to adopt a water policy to address water issues, conservation, and protection of water sources. Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said that the policy aims to achieve sustainable development, management of water resources with active community participation from the grassroots level.
