Probe Demanded By Shiladitya Dev On Pregnant Woman Stripped, Beaten Case

Dev said veeranganas should be appointed in those cells to curb love-jihad cases

Bharatiya Janata Party’s Hojai legislator Shiladitya Dev on September 19th, 2019 demanded a quick probe into the case where a pregnant woman was brutally beaten at the Burha police outpost in Darrang district.

Speaking with media persons in the city, Dev said, “It a shameful incident that occurred and strict action should be taken against the culprits.”

It may be mentioned, on September 9th, 2019, the Burha Police picked up one Manowara Begum, her husband and two sisters from Guwahati for an investigation into a case against their brother Rasul Ali, who had allegedly kidnapped a girl.

The pregnant woman and two of her sisters were allegedly stripped and tortured inside the outpost. The woman told local media persons that she was carrying for two months. She claimed that the pregnancy had to be terminated after she sustained severe injuries at the police outpost. The women further claimed that they were beaten in their private parts too.

Later, SI Mahendra Sarma and Constable Binita Boro were placed under suspension on September 17th, 2019 as Darrang Superintendent of Police, Amrit Bhuyan ordered an inquiry into the matter.

Deb also said that cases related to love-jihad were increasing in Assam and it should be brought under the strict vigil of police.

He said, “Cases related to love-jihad are increasing in the society and mostly Bangladeshis fake their names in social media and woo Hindu girls and this has to stop. Assam Police should form a special cell to keep a check on such cases.”

“Veeranganas should be appointed in those cells who will work excellently to curb love-jihad cases in the state. Parents should also keep a check on their children,” added Deb.
