
Indian lifter from Guwahati, Rakhi Sarma has brought laurels to the state after she bagged bronze at the recently held World Masters Power-lifting Championship 2019 in South Africa.
Sarma lifted 350 kilograms as she represented India at the international platform on October 12th, 2019 among other sportspersons from 23 countries including Canada, USA, Great Britain, South Africa to name a few. She was the only Indian woman this year to participate at the World Masters Power-lifting Championship.
The veteran athlete received a warm welcome at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport as she landed in her hometown on October 15th, 2019. Different groups and organizations gathered at the airport to felicitate her for her achievement. She hails from the Gandhi Basti area of Guwahati city.
“I am extremely happy that I could make my state and country proud by achieving a position. I would like to thank the honorable Chief Minister of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal and all those who helped me achieve this position. It was a great experience altogether,” said Sarma while speaking with Time8.
Last year, the powerlifter had won the Master National Powerlifting championship in Kozhikode. She has won around 27 medals including national and international in powerlifting since 1986.
