    Panic Grips Assam Over NRC Re-Verification Notices

    Guwahati: Serving of re-verification notices from the National Register of Citizens (NRC) authorities has triggered panic among a section of people mostly from the minority community in several Lower Assam districts.

    As per reports, the notice has asked the people to appear for hearing on August 5th, 2019 and that also in far-flung districts in Upper Assam. The notices are served in Kamrup, Barpeta and Baksa districts of Lower Assam.

    As per information available, 50 per cent of the people in Muslim-dominated villages, such as Goroimari, Topamari, Sontoli, Kalatoli and Maligari of Kamrup district had received the re-verification notice till August 3rd, 2019. Similar notices have reportedly been served in minority areas of districts such as Barpeta, Goalpara, Dhubri, Morigaon and Karimganj.

    The Supreme Court which aims to weed out illegal immigrants through the publication of the NRC on July 23rd, 2019  extended the deadline for publication of the NRC from July 31st, 2019 to August 31st, 2019.

    On the midnight of December 31st, 2017, partial draft of the NRC was released and subsequently on July 30th, 2018, the complete draft NRC was released. A total of 28,983,677 persons were found eligible out of 32,991,384 applicants in the final draft of the NRC.

    The NRC authorities on June 26th, 2019 published an additional draft exclusion list consisting of 1,02,462 persons.
