Odisha on April 9th, 2020 has become the first state in the country to extend the lockdown in view of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The lockdown period has been extended till April 30th, 2020 in Odisha, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced.

The Chief Minister also recommended the Union Government to extend the nationwide lockdown till April 30th, 2020.

Patnaik has further requested the Centre not to start train and air services till April 30th, 2020.

The educational institutions in Odisha to remain closed till June 17th, 2020.

The 21-day nationwide lockdown was imposed on March 25th, 2020 to contain the spread of COVID-19.

A cabinet meeting was held on April 9th, 2020 through video conferencing.

“Coronavirus is the biggest threat that the human race has faced in more than a century. Life will not be the same ever,” Patnaik said.

He added, “All of us must understand this and face it boldly together. With our sacrifice and with the blessings of Lord Jagannath this too shall pass.”

The cabinet mentioned that the free movement of goods transport will be allowed during the lockdown period.

“Food security of people is of utmost importance. Agriculture, animal husbandry, MGNREGS related activities to be facilitated following social distancing norms,” Patnaik added further.
