The Assam Police on January 31st, 2020 arrested National Students’ Union of India(NSUI) state Vice President Zubair Anam from Rajiv Bhawan in a vandalism case registered at Dispur Police Station. The NSUI has smelled a conspiracy and demanded the release of the student leader.
Reports claimed that Anam has been alleged of inciting violence and vandalising Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra during the anti-CAA protests that rocked the city in December last year. He was arrested after a press conference at the Congress headquarters yesterday afternoon.
The Police said he is being interrogated in case 3768/19 under Sections 143,144,145, 147, 148, 149, 188, 336, 435, 427 of the IPC along with Section 3 of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, 1984.
“Arresting Zubair Anam, Vice-President of Assam NSUI is nothing but clear political vendetta. He was arrested on the case for which he is already out on bail. We, NSUI condemn this act done by Assam Police on the instructions of BJP Government.” NSUI wrote on its Twitter.
The students’ body alleged that despite getting bail by the High Court, the state police “framed” the state NSUI VP in another case and arrested him. They urged the government to release the CCTV footage of the vandalism incident and vehemently condemned the arrest.
