No ATM Services In Baksa Tea Estates, Workers Complain Of Govt’s ‘Unfulfilled Promises’

Post demonetization, Menoka Tea Estate in Baksa district was one of the tea gardens in the state to have an ATM facility

At a time when the BJP-led NDA government had announced to set up ATM services including banking facilities in the tea estates of the state, more than thousands of workers employed in two tea estates in Lower Assam are experiencing a harrowing time.

Post demonetization, Menoka Tea Estate in Baksa district was one of the tea gardens in the state to have an ATM facility. Installed way back on November 25th, 2016, the services continued for around one-and-half-year but was shut down later due to several issues, informed a worker here. The workers of Nagrijuli Tea Estate of the district are also deprived of the ATM services.

Now, around 750 employees and workers of the Nagrijuli Tea Estate are facing hardship to get their payments. “Instead of the online payment system, the wages are tabulated here,” said Pradip Kumar Singh, manager of Menoka Tea Estate.

“What is the use of Digital India and Cashless India campaigns when people cannot avail the services? People are forced to travel 5-20 km to withdraw cash from the ATMs at Darangamela, Tamulpur and Kamrup,” the manager added.

“We request the government to kindly install ATMs here so that we can receive our wages timely and do not have to walk the extra mile to withdraw the money,” said a worker.

It may be mentioned that the Digital India campaign was launched by the BJP government at the Centre in order to ensure the Government’s services are made available to citizens electronically by improved online infrastructure making the country digitally empowered in the field of technology.
