Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is likely to visit Guwahati on February 27th, 2020 to take part in an on-spot Aadhaar enrollment drive by the State Bank of India (SBI).
The drive will be launched by the SBI during its three-day-long Financial Inclusion Outreach Initiative (FIOI) for Northeast in Guwahati.
The event will kick-start on February 26th, 2020 at Veterinary College playground in Khanapara.
Sunil Kumar Tandon, Chief General manager for Northeast India of SBI said that Aadhaar enrollment is low in Assam.
The drive will be launched with an aim to increase the number of SBI and other bank customers to link Aadhaar with their accounts.
Private, co-operative, rural and NBFC banks will participate in the event. The SBI will set up 10 machines for the Aadhaar enrollment.
The Aadhaar enrollment in Assam was rolled out in Assam in 2018, however, it was kept on hold due to the updation of the National Register of Citizens.
Aadhaar is a 12-digit unique identity number that can be obtained voluntarily by residents or passport holders of India, based on their biometric and demographic data. The data is collected by the Unique Identification Authority of India. Aadhaar is the world’s largest biometric ID system.
