Nirbhaya Rape Case: Delhi Court Defers Hanging Of Death Row Convicts Till Further Order

Hanging of the four death row convicts was scheduled for March 3rd, 2020, at 6 am

A Delhi court on March 2nd, 2020, deferred the hanging of four death row convicts of the 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape and murder convict till further order.

Hanging of the convicts was scheduled for March 3rd, 2020, at 6 am. Additional Sessions Judge Dharmender Rana said the death sentence cannot be executed pending disposal of mercy petition of convict Pawan Kumar Gupta, Livemint reported.

The court passed the order on Pawan Gupta’s plea seeking to stay the execution as he has filed a mercy petition before the President today.

Meanwhile, Asha Devi, mother of 2012 Delhi gang-rape victim, said, “Our system completely supports criminals. Why is the court taking so much time to execute its own order to hang the convicts? Repeated postponing of the execution shows the failure of our system.”

On February 17th, 2020, the trial court issued fresh date for execution of death warrants for March 3rd at 6 am for the four convicts – Gupta, Mukesh Kumar Singh (32), Vinay Kumar Sharma (26) and Akshay Singh (31) – in the Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case.
