Fireflies (Jonaki Porua), a film by Prakash Deka is getting ready for its international film festival runs and it will have its North American premiere at the Twin Cities Film Festival, Minneapolis on October followed by the Indian Film Festival of Ireland, 2019 in the month of November.

Fireflies is a story based in a remote village in Assam and tell the story of a trans woman coming in terms with her identity. Deka carefully treads into the story of the protagonist and sheds light on how society treats transgenders.

Produced by Milin Dutta, the film also has an intensely personal element of Dutta who is a trans man born and brought up in Assam. Dutta, a computer engineer by profession has found various social activist groups who fight for the rights of the LGBTQ community in Northeast. This film is his first production and it has already won accolades from all walks of life.

Fireflies is also the official selection for the Independent Prisma Film Awards, Rome for its October edition and it perfectly fits the festival’s core belief, cinema should challenge the status quo and shifting perceptions.

In the month of November, Jonaki Porua will be screened in the Indian Film Festival of Ireland and its aims to introduce to the Irish audience with the global vision of Indian cinema.

After all the international film festival runs, it will return to India in November and will be screened at the Dialogues-Calcutta International LGBTQ Film And Video Festival, one of the most prestigious queer film festivals in India. Later, in the month of February 2020, it will be screened at the Bengaluru Queer Film Festival.
