Patna-based mathematician and founder of the popular ‘Super 30’ education programme, Anand Kumar appeared before the Gauhati High Court’s Division Bench of Chief Justice Ajai Lamba and Justice AM Bazarburah on November 28th, 2019.
It may be recalled, the High Court on November 26th, 2019 directed Anand to appear personally before the court on November 28th, 2019 after he failed to appear before it on November 26th, 2019 as per its order in connection with a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by four students of Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT), Guwahati.
Anand apologised before the court and deposited Rs 50,000 as directed by the Court to the students and guardians who claimed that he cheated them in the name of Super 30. The guardians and student had appeared for a scheduled hearing on November 26th, 2019 in a case of cheating against him.
Way back in September 2018, four IIT Guwahati students had lodged a PIL accusing Anand of cheating and said there was no transparency in the functioning of ‘Super 30’.
Amit Goyal, appearing for the petitioners told Time8 that the Division Bench of the Court took note of the averments made in the PIL, the affidavit filed by Abhayanand, former DGP, Bihar, affidavits filed by other students who claimed that they have been cheated by Anand in the name of ‘Super 30’ and affidavit filed by Anand.
“The court observed that it would be appropriate if the petitioners approach the court who has jurisdiction over Patna and accordingly liberty is granted to the petitioners to approach the court who has jurisdiction over Patna and accordingly PIL is closed as withdrawn,” Goyal said.
‘Super 30’ is an educational programme started in Patna, India under the banner of Ramanujan School of Mathematics. It was co-founded by Abhayanand, a 1977 batch IPS officer and, Anand, a maths teacher in the year 2002.
In an affidavit filed by Abhayanand before the Gauhati High Court, it is stated that he conceptualized the “noble programme of ‘Super 30’ with the idea of solving the society’s problems”.
