Protests against the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill continued to rock Assam on December 3rd, 2019 as Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) chief Hagrama Mohilary was shown black flags at Tamulpur, Baksa district.

Mohilary is the first person against whom black flags were waived after the Centre listed the Bill to table during the ongoing winter session of the Parliament.

The activists of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) Tamulpur unit waived black flags at Mohilary’s convoy at Motonga Chowk as it was returning from Nagrijuli.

Students, civil bodies, political parties are protesting against the BJP-led governments in Assam and Centre for attempting to bring in the Bill that seeks to grant Indian citizenship to non-Muslims who fled religious persecution from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan and entered India before December 31, 2014.

Effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal were burnt across the state in the last few days.

Earlier this year, black flags were waived and black balloons were released statewide to protest against the Bill. In February 2019, AASU members showed black flags to Modi as he travelled to Raj Bhavan from the airport after he arrived in Guwahati.

The Gauhati University students waved black flags at Modi in Jalukbari area, while the activists of the KMSS and AJYCP did the same at Adabari and Fancy Bazar areas.

The Centre will attempt to pass the Bill during the ongoing Winter Session by December 10th, 2019, Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was quoted as saying by several media.
