An elephant has gone on a rampage in Goalpara district of Assam, trampling five people to death on October 30th, 2019. The jumbo, nicknamed ‘Laden’ by the locals, is currently inside the Koinakuchi forest and efforts are underway to tranquillize the elephant.

The elephants crushed to death three women, an 11-year old boy and 70-year old man in Bataitari, Santipurnigam, Paschim Matia, Hidhabari and Hahsorabri villages in the last 24 hours.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh each to the next of kin of those killed in the attack. He also directed them to provide adequate medical treatment to those injured.

Sonowal also held a meeting with the Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of Police and senior officials of Goalpara. He took stock of recent man-elephant conflict in the district and directed the forest department to immediately rush a specialized team to control the situation and capture the rogue elephant if required.

As per local, ‘Laden’ has trampled more than 50 people to death during the last few years.
