Festivities For Durga Puja Begins Today

During Sashti the eyes of Goddess Durga are drawn to bring life to the main idol

The much-awaited Durga Puja has finally arrived and festivities have already kick-started across the state. Streets are decked up with lights and pandals have come up in several places. Today is Sashti and it is considered the beginning of Durga Puja.

During Sashti the eyes of Goddess Durga are drawn to bring life to the main idol. Like every year, pandal hoppers get a treat to the eyes as many mandaps have come up with unique themes. An estimate of over 500 puja pandals has been erected this year in the city.

Speaking of unique Durga Puja pandals, one will definitely pull the crowd this year is the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO)-themed puja pandal that has been erected in the Chatribari area of Guwahati. It is a tribute to Vikram Sarabhai on his 100th birth anniversary and to celebrate 50 years of ISRO.

Governor of Assam, Jagdish Mukhi conveyed puja greetings to the people of the state. “Durga Puja marks the eternal essence of victory of good over evil and ushers in hope and bright future. I hope that the festivity strengthens the spirit of unity to fight against all evils. May the darshan of resplendent Goddess Durga fill everybody’s life with devotion, compassion and love,” Mukhi said.

“May Maa Durga the deity of Shakti guide us all in the path of righteousness and bless us all with peace, joy and prosperity,” he added.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal attended the Platinum Jubilee celebrations of Marwari Patty Durga Puja committee in Dibrugarh and prayed for the development of Assam.

Also, the Kamakhya temple has already started witnessing a huge rush of devotees which will continue with Mahasaptami, Mahaashtami and Mahanavami.
