MHA Says Non-Inclusion In NRC Doesn’t Make One Foreigner

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has appealed to the people in the state to not panic if their names do not appear in the final NRC

With a day left for the publication of the final list of National Register of Citizens (NRC), the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to alleviate fears of the people regarding the citizenship list on August 29th, 2019 stated that non-inclusion of a person’s name from the final NRC does not make him/her a foreigner.

The MHA took to their Twitter handle, retweeted an advisory shared by the Assam Police and wrote, “Do not believe in rumours about NRC. Non-inclusion of a person’s name in NRC does NOT amount to his/her being declared a foreigner,”.

The tweet further mentioned that every individual who will be left out of the final NRC can approach a Foreigners Tribunal(FT) and a number of FTs have been set up at the major places for the same purpose.

It may be mentioned, the final NRC will be published on August 31st, 2019 and the status of all NRC applicants will be available online from September 7th, 2019.

While the NRC officials are working day and night to ensure an error-free final list, the Assam government is making all possible efforts to strengthen the security apparatus in the run-up to the publication of NRC and post its publication.

The state government is also ready to provide legal aid to the needy whose names do not figure in the final NRC list.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal appealed to the people in the state to not panic if their names do not appear in the final NRC.

Meanwhile, the Assam police have made adequate security arrangements to maintain law and order before and after the publication of the final NRC.

On the midnight of December 31st, 2017, a partial draft of the NRC was released and subsequently on July 30th, 2018, the complete draft NRC was released. A total of 2,89,83,677 persons were found eligible out of 3,29,91,384 applicants in the final draft of the NRC. The NRC authorities on June 26th, 2019 published an additional draft exclusion list consisting of 1,02,462 persons.
