The Church of God located in Qualapatty, Shillong was gutted in a fierce inferno that broke out in the wee hours of November 17th, 2019.
As per reports, an elderly couple and their dog died due to suffocation as their house was located near the church.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma took to Facebook and expressed that he was devastated by the news. He wrote, “#Meghalaya woke up to the tragic news of the Church of God, Qualapatty being gutted in fire that also claimed lives this morning. The indigenous church is one of the oldest in the State. My prayers for the deceased and the Church of God family.”
Reportedly, the fire started at around 3 am in the morning and it later it got out of control and gutted the church.
The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.
It may be mentioned, the Church of God is an indigenous church and it was built in the year 1902.
