    Meghalaya To Get Its First State Zoo By 2022

    The zoo will be completed by January 2022: Lakhmen Rymbui

    The Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on October 1st, 2019, laid down the foundation stone for state’s first zoo at Umtrew, Ri Bhoi.

    “This Zoo will be a place where the people especially the children will get a chance to see the wildlife of the State while learning to take care and respect these animals,” Sangma said while addressing the valedictory function of the Wildlife Week 2019. He further said that the zoo should not only be a place of entertainment but a centre of learning, respecting, protecting, rescue and conservation of wildlife.

    Sangma, while taking to Twitter, wrote, “I am sure that this Zoo will provide safe & secure environment for rescued animals & will give an opportunity for the people to peep into the rich fauna diversity of the State (sic).”

    Besides, he said, “As citizens we have the responsibility to keep balance while moving forward with changing times. Change is imperative and while keeping up with the changing world there should be a balance between economy and ecology.” The CM also appealed the people of the state to protect and conserve this Biodiversity the flora and fauna of the state.

    Earlier, addressing the gathering Forests and Environment minister Lakhmen Rymbui said, “A total of 72 hectares of land was acquired in 2001 for the State Zoo and the Central Zoo Authority has given its approval for the State Zoo which will have eight enclosures.” He further hoped that the zoo would be completed by January, 2022.
