In his three-decade-long career, the artist not only brought laurels to the state but also helped to generate employment

Born in a small hamlet in Nalbari district’s Sathikuchi village, Guwahati-based artist Nuruddin Ahmed is continuing to create magic with his creative craftsmanship year after year. Guwahati has witnessed his designing marvel every year during Durga Puja. He never ceases to surprise pandal hoppers with his innovative ideas.

This year, the National award-winning artist and his team designed the Guwahati’s Bishnupur Bimala Nagar Sarbajanin Durga Puja pandal as Pandora of Avatar with the floating hills. Way back in 2017, Ahmed built a 98-feet Durga Idol made of bamboo at the Bishnupur puja pandal which was enlisted in the Limca Book of Records as the tallest Durga idol. The idol was damaged by storm a week ahead of the puja, however, Ahmed re-build it with the help of his co-workers. He is also credited with building 55 feet in height idol of Lord Ganesha as the theme of the Durga Puja pandal many years ago in Guwahati.

In his three-decade-long career, the artist not only brought laurels to the state but also helped to generate employment. Ahmed is also a Sangeet Natak Akademi awardee.

Ahmed established Rajdeep Art Studio some 27 years ago and till now 400 students have undergone training under him, according to a documentary by Assam Government. 40 artists are working with Ahmed at present.

The studio takes several projects like creating idols, statues, sculptures of eminent personalities, sets of films and so on. Ahmed’s team has brought several Hindu Goddesses, Gods, and theme-based pandals to life for several years now. For Ahmed, art is above all religion.

In his early life, the art director faced a lot of financial constraints which led him to return back home from Mumbai. Later, he established his own studio. He worked as an art director in several Assamese films by noted directors Jahnu Baruah, Munin Baruah, mobile theatres, plays and so on. He also worked as art director of Bhaben Saikia films.

Ahmed’s work of art is truly a treat for the eyes. With extraordinary creativity, Ahmed is an exemplar of fine craftsmanship and has set high benchmarks in the field of designing.
