Major Gas Leak In Visakhapatnam’s Chemical Plant, 5 Dead, 200 Fall Sick

Several fell ill due to chemical gas leakage inside a pharmaceutical company at RR Venkatapuram village in Visakhapatnam


At least five people, including two women and a child, died and 200 others fell severely sick after inhaling poisonous gas leaked from a chemical factory in Andhra Pradesh’s Visakhapatnam district in the early hours of May 7th, 2020.

As per reports, the gas leak occurred at around 3 am at LG Polymers Ltd at Gopalapatnam, when people in the nearby colonies were fast asleep.

The gas has spread to 20 nearby villages, causing suffocation to the people.

People are being taken to the hospitals after they complained of burning sensation in eyes and breathing difficulties.

Police, fire tenders, ambulances and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have reached the spot to control the situation and evacuate the people.

In viral videos and photographs, several people are seen lying on the streets unconscious after being unable to bear the pungent smell of the gas

A large number of people, mostly children and old people, have fainted within their homes, assistant commissioner of police Swaroopa Rani said told media.

Rani also said that the police are unable to enter the colonies because of the foul smell. An ambulance driver who was sent to move the sick to the hospitals was also suffocated and nauseous.

Srijana Gummalla, Commissioner, Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation tweeted, “Please take necessary precautions. Leave the neighbourhood. Ambulances and @GVMC_OFFICIAL staff have been pressed into service. Will give more details once we are out of rescue operations. “

Fire tenders from Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd were trying to reduce the impact of the gas using water.

People have been asked to use wt cloth as mask to cover their nose and mouth.

The LG polymers company was making arrangements for reopening the plant from May 7th, 2020, after more than 40 days of closure.
