Lt Gen Rana Pratap Kalita became the first from Assam and second from the Northeast to be appointed as the General Officer Commanding of Nagaland’s Dimapur-based 3 Corps.
Lt Gen KH Singh (retd) of Manipur was the first from the region to don the corps commander’s mantle.
Prior to his first appointment, Lt Gen Kalita was serving as the Chief of Staff in Eastern Command. He was commissioned in the 9 Kumaon Regiment in 1984 and was elevated to the rank of lieutenant general in March last year.
An alumnus of the Sainik School in Goalpara district of Assam, he was born in Rangia in Kamrup (rural) district to Jogendra Kalita and Renu Kalita. Lt Gen Kalita is decorated with Sena Medal and Vishisht Seva Medal (twice) for his outstanding service.
Lt Gen Kalita was also the GOC during the Uri attacks in Kashmir. He was also awarded Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in 2018.
