Union Home Minister Amit Shah to table the Citizenship Amendment Bill


The winter session of the Parliament on December 9th, 2019 witnesses an action-packed day as the controversial Citizenship Amendment Bill was tabled in the Lok Sabha. Union Home Minister Amit Shah introduced the Bill amid massive opposition and protests.

The Bill seeks to grant citizenship to non-Muslims from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan who reached the Indian territory on or before December 31, 2014.

People in the Northeast including Assam have been staging protests against the bill as they believe it is an attempt by the government to nullify the 1985 Assam Accord, a result of six years of agitation against illegal settlement of immigrants in the region.

6:25 PM: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for exempting Manipur from the purview of Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2019 by bringing in Inner Line Permit system to the State.

The Chief Minister also added that ‘the 4 decades-old movements of the people of Manipur to protect indigenous culture and identity which got intensified since 2005 has been heard and resolved”.

5:55 PM: Citizenship Bill is for persecuted minorities who have come to India. If they are here for at least 5 years, they can claim Indian citizenship. We are open to providing refugee status to many people, including refugees from Sri Lanka and Pakistan: BJP General Secretary Ram Madhav.

5:50 PM: Countering Amit Shah’s claim that Congress partitioned India based on religion, Congress MP, Manish Tewari said, “the foundation for two-nation theory was laid in 1935 in Ahmedabad by Savarkar in a Hindu Mahasabha session and not Congress.”

5:45 PM: Arunachal Chief Minister Pema Khandu thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for exempting the state from Citizenship Bill.

5:40 PM: There should be no agitation against the Bill and things are being politicised particularly by the Congress. There is no effect of the bill including Manipur or anywhere else, but people are being instigated: Manipur Education Minister, Thokchom Radheshyam Singh on Citizenship Bill.

5:25 PM: The arguments of the opposition parties against Citizenship Bill are misleading. The Bill is not about excluding anybody, rather it is about including people from minorities who have come over to India in last 7 decades: BJP general secretary Ram Madhav.

3:05 PM: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee opposes NRC and Citizenship Amendment Bill.

2:59 PM: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to oppose the Citizenship Amendment Bill in Parliament. Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh has said that the proposed law is an attempt to end democracy in India.

2:50 PM: The Dergaon unit of AASU has continued their protest against Citizenship Bill. The protesters staged agitation with effigies of Amit Shah, Sarbananda Sonowal.

1:25 PM: The bill will grant citizenship to six communities residing in India under the reasonable ground of classification and it does not go against Article 14: Amit Shah.

10:50 AM: Indian Union Muslim League party MPs stage protest in front of Mahatma Gandhi statue in Parliament premises opposing CAB.

10: 40 AM: Senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal hits out at the Government opposing the Citizenship Bill. He said that ‘CAB is a cab ride with a divisive driver’.

10:35 AM: Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Pralhad Joshi: The Bill is in the interest of Northeast states and the country. The Bill will get nod from both the Houses of the Parliament.

10:25 AM: Uttar Pradesh Shia Central Waqf Board chairman Wasim Rizvi has written to Amit Shah, requesting him to include Shia community in CAB.

10:21 AM: The Bill will be introduced in the Lower House at 12 noon by Home Minister Amit Shah.

10:20 AM: Around 900 scientists from leading research institutions of India have strongly protested against the proposed Citizenship Amendment Bill. In a statement released yesterday, they said that “the use of religion as a criterion for citizenship” would mark a “radical break” with the “idea of India that emerged from the independence movement.”

9:00 AM: Protesters paint the newly painted walls near Janata Bhawan with Anti-CAB slogans.

8:30 AM: The All Assam Chutia Students’ Union (AACSU) has called for a 12-hour Assam bandh demanding the withdrawal today. The bandh was observed in parts of the state as most of the business establishments remained shut. The All Moran Students’ Union(AMSU) has also called for a 48-hour shut down in the state opposing the bill.
