    LIVE: Assam By-Election Results 2019 Updates

    The counting of votes of by-elections to four assembly constituencies in Assam began on October 24th, 2019. The fate of 20 contestants in the four seats -Rangapara, Sonari, Ratabari and Jania – will be known when results will be announced after counting of votes in the evening hours.

    The by-elections to these four constituencies were necessitated after sitting Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislatures and ministers Pallab Lochan Das (Rangapara) and Tapan Gogoi (Sonari) along with Deputy Speaker Kripanath Mallah (Ratabari) and Congress MLA Abdul Khaleque (Jania) were elected to the Lok Sabha this year.

    In Rangapara, five candidates are in the fray – Rajen Bortakur of BJP, Kartik Kurmi of Congress, Sanjit Rajbangshi of SUCI (Communist), Royal Soreng of CPI(M) and Arup Kumar Chowdhury of the Bharatiya Gana Parishad.

    In Sonari, BJP’s Nabanita Handique and Sushil Kumar Suri of Congress are pitted against each other. On the other hand, four candidates are vying for the Ratabari seat. They are Bijoy Malakar of the BJP, Keshab Prasad Rajak of the Congress, Birendra Ravidas (SUCI-Communist) and Parikhit Roy (Independent).

    As many as nine candidates are in the fray for the Jania seat: Towfiqur Rahman (BJP), Samsul Hoque (Congress), Rafiqul Islam (AIUDF), Chand Mahmud (NPP), Faruk Khan (AAP), Rustom Ali (CPI-M), Rafikul Islam (Democratic Party of India), Abdul Jalil Talukdar (Ind) and Subhash Sutradhar (Independent).

    4:00 PM: BJP Bags Two Seats In Sikkim

    Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) ally BJP registered its first-ever electoral victory in Sikkim by winning two seats. While, PS Golay, the SKM founder, defeated his nearest rival Moses Rai of the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF), BJP candidates Sonam TSH Venchungpa and Yong Tshering Lepcha won from Martam Rumtek and Gangtok Assembly constituencies respectively.

    3:00 PM: AIUDF Emerges Victorious In Jania

    Rafiqul Islam of the AIUDF wins Jania seat by 35,037 votes. In last assembly election in Assam, Congress won the Jania seat.

    2:49 PM: BJP Retains All Three Assembly Seats Of Assam

    Assam Finance Minister took to Twitter to announce that the BJP has retained all the three assembly seats of Assam. His party contested in Rangapara, Ratabari and Sonari and it has marked thumping victory in all the three seats.

    The BJP has won the Ratabari LAC seat by 23982 votes. Bijoy Malakar has garnered 68512 votes while his closest opponent Keshab Prasad Rajak of Congress has secured 44530 votes

    12:40 PM: BJP’s Rajen Borthakur Maintains Leading Trend In Rangapara

    The ruling BJP is leading in three of the four Assembly seats in Assam, where by-polls were held. The saffron party contender Rajen Borthakur is leading over his nearest rival Kartik Kurmi of the Congress by 31,592 votes in Rangapara

    11: 50 AM: UDP Leading In Shella Constituency Of Meghalaya

    United Democratic Party (UDP) candidate, Balajied Synrem is leading in Shella constituency in Meghalaya. The by-election to Shella constituency was necessitated following the demise of sitting MLA Donkupar Roy on July 28th, 2019. Supporters are getting ready to celebrate victory. Balajied Synrem is Donkupar’s son who is in fray for the Shella LAC bypoll.

    11:30 AM: Chakat Aboh, Wife Of Slain NPP Leader Leading

    Independent candidate Chakat Aboh is leading over independent candidate Azet Homtok as per early trends in the Khonsa West Assembly seat. Five political parties of Arunachal Pradesh had earlier decided not to field any candidate and unanimously support Chakat Aboh, wife of Tirong Aboh, the sitting MLA of Khonsa West Assembly seat who was shot dead in broad daylight by suspected NSCN-IM militants on May 21st, 2019.

    11:00 AM: BJP Wins Rumtek Assembly Seat In Sikkim

    The AIUDF is taking a massive lead till the counting of the fourth round of votes. As reported the AIUDF is leading by 6617 votes. The Jania seat has been a Congress stronghold.
