Stand-up comedian Abhineet Mishra is a strong advocate against racism faced by people of Northeast India. He delivers some eye-opening comedy stints, posts on Facebook and videos that highlight the despair and prejudices faced by people of Northeast India in the national capital and other states.

This time too, he has come up with a video where he is seen reciting a poem about Northeast India. He begins with Assam ki mekhela chador ko dekhne se tum nazar nahi hata pate ho, agle din tum chinky chinky kehke kyu usse bulate ho? (You can’t take off your eyes from Assam’s mekhela chador and next day, you call out people as chinky).

Taking a sarcastic dig, he further questions that how a girl wearing the puanchei from Mizoram will know the weather of China and when a girl from Meghalaya is singing the national anthem, her nationality is questioned.

Mishra further mentions that as the Northeastern part is located within the boundaries of India then why should people from Northeast answer questions thrown to them.

In the last stanza of the poem, Mishra questions how many times Northeasterners have to prove their love for the country. He says, “Aur kab tak har chourahe pein pesh kare sabut apne desh bhakti ka, aur jawab de tum jaise gawaro ka (How many times will we have to prove our love for our country and answer the fools?).

Hailing from Shillong, Meghalaya, Mishra has time and again spoken about Northeast and tried to deliver strong messages through his acts. Earlier this year, this journalist-turned stand-up comedian drew the attention of people towards the serious issue of illegal coal mining in Meghalaya and the 15 miners trapped in an illegal coal pit in East Jaintia Hills.

In the viral six-minute long video clip, Mishra highlighted the lack of coverage of the Northeastern region by the mainstream media.

Next time, before asking a question to your Northeast friend, listen to this poem and get your all doubts cleared.
