Liquor Shops in Assam have been closed in Assam till further notice from the government as the state excise department has hiked the price of liquor 25 percent.

A source informed that the sale of liquor in the state might be shut for another two to three days as there are a lot of formalities in regarding the stock undergoing. Along with this, the already existing stock of liquor in the warehouse and shops will be rebranded with the new price which the excise has imposed.

Once these formalities are done, the sale of liquor will restart.

The Government of Assam on Friday decided to increase the price of liquor in the state by 25 per cent on the MRP in order to generate extra revenue to the ongoing loses because of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

The government has proposed the hike of 25 per cent in brands of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL), beer, wine and other such products.

As per the government officials, this hike will help the government bring additional revenue of Rs 1000 crore.
