Khelo India Youth Games: Gold Medallists From Assam To Receive Rs 1 Lakh

Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal announced a reward of Rs 100,000 for the gold medal winners, from Assam, in the Khelo India Youth Games as an incentive. The silver and bronze medallists will be paid Rs 75,000 and Rs 50,000 respectively.

Interacting with the media in Guwahati on December 28th, 2019, the former Union Sports Minister said that the focus of his government was towards making Guwahati the sports capital of the country. 

Sonowal stated that Northeast is a powerhouse of talent and Khelo India Youth Games provides an opportunity to Assam’s youth to showcase their talent.

“We are trying to integrate sports with education & culture, and aiming to involve everyone in sports through Village Olympics, which will drive the movement at the grassroots,” he said.

He added, “To motivate sportspersons from Assam, the state government will provide Rs 1 lakh, Rs 75,000 and Rs 50,000 to gold, silver and bronze medallists at the Khelo India Youth Games 2020. The government will also provide Rs 50,000 cash award to 1,000 sportspersons of the state.”

Sonowal stated that the government was making the best possible efforts to make the third edition of Khelo India Youth Games a success and memorable experience for all participants.

The Khelo India programme has been introduced to revive the sports culture in India at the grass-root level by building a strong framework for all sports played in our country and establish India as a great sporting nation. 

The 3rd edition of Khelo India Youth Games will start from January 10th, 2020 and will continue till  January 22nd, 2019. The event has two mascots – Jaya, the blackbuck and Vijay, the tiger.

The event will be held in 20 disciplines with the participation of 37 states and Union Territories. Khelo India programme’s inaugural edition was held in New Delhi in 2018, while Pune hosted 2nd edition in 2019.
