Khelo India In Assam: 6,800 Athletes To Compete In 20 Sporting Events

The Assam government announced a reward of Rs 100,000 for the gold medal winners in the Khelo India Youth Games as an incentive


The state in Assam is all set. The third edition of Khelo India Youth Games will kick off in Guwahati on January 10th, 2020 and will continue till January 22nd, 2020. 

The opening ceremony will be held at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium, also known as Sarusajai Stadium, on January 10th, 2020. Ace sprinter Hima Das will be the torchbearer in the opening ceremony of the event.

Around 6,800 athletes from 37 teams will compete in a total of 20 national level multidisciplinary grassroots games, including new additions – lawn bowls and cycling. The sporting events will take place in eight venues across Guwahati.

Chief Minister of Assam Sarbanada Sonowal said that these games will help Assam to become a sports powerhouse. Sonowal along with Minister of State (I/C) for Youth Affairs and Sports Kiren Rijiju, along with a host of star athletes are expected to be present at the inaugural function.

As per information, various performances by ethnic communities from across Assam have been lined up and special acts have been devised to celebrate the natural beauty and heroes of the state.

The third edition of the games will witness many first time initiatives which include having aircrafts dedicated to ferry athletes from Kolkata and Delhi to Guwahati. Electric cars will be used at the venues of the games under the Go-Green Programme.

The event has two mascots – Jaya, the blackbuck and Vijay, the tiger. Assam and Maharashtra will field biggest contingents at the Khelo India Youth Games.

The Assam government announced a reward of Rs 100,000 for the gold medal winners in the Khelo India Youth Games as an incentive. The silver and bronze medallists will be paid Rs 75,000 and Rs 50,000 respectively.
