Karimganj North Congress MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha on October 31st, 2019 came down heavily on Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal for turning ‘blind eye’ to the syndicates running in the state.
“Illegal coal syndicate is rampant in Assam. But our Chief Minister has decided to turn into a ‘Dhritarashtra’ and overlook the corruption going on in the state. Ratabari by-polls were won by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by using syndicate money,” the MLA said.
He added, “A total of 10 MLAs including four-five from Barak valley are involved in the coal syndicate. One DIG-level officer is also involved in the syndicate. Chief Minister Sonowal, Assam Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma are aware of the syndicates and yet they have not taken any action.”
In the recently held by-elections in Assam, the BJP won Ratabari, Sonari and Rangapara seats while All India United Democratic Front won the Jania seat.
A month back, Congress MP from Nagaon in Assam, Pradyut Bordoloi had alleged that illegal coal mining syndicate was running in Tinsukia district under the knowledge of Sonowal. The MP had also alleged that the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police are involved in the syndicate.
