The 13th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will begin from March 29th, 2020 with the defending champions Mumbai Indians playing the curtain-raiser against the 2019 runner-up Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede Stadium in the opening match.
The governing council this year has decided to remove doubleheaders, there will only be six doubleheaders, all of them taking place on Sundays.
The whole season will be played for 50 days with the league phase ending on May 17. The schedule for the knockout phase is yet to be announced by the governing council.
While Rajasthan Royals is reported to play two games in Assam’s Guwahati city against Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals, the other franchises will stick to their original venues.
Although the 2019 inaugural champions have not officially disclosed their match fixtures reports claimed that they will open their match against Chennai Super Kings on April 2nd, 2020 in Chennai. They will play its first home game against Delhi Capitals on April 5th.
Earlier Assam Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had announced that the RR’s two matches will be held in Guwahati.
Usually, the RR play their home games at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur, Rajasthan. The franchise had requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to allow playing few matches of the 2020 edition of the IPL in Guwahati.
A PIL was filed at the Rajasthan High Court challenging the decision of RSS to shift a couple of their home games to Guwahati. However, the BCCI has backed the RR and made it clear that they have not broken any rules in requesting for a second home venue.
The franchise has an Assam connection as Guwahati boy Riyan Parag plays for the franchise. Earlier this year, RR’s chief operating officer, Jake Lush McCrum had visited the Barsapara stadium along with Riyan, to inspect the stadium. He also held a discussion with the Assam Cricket Association officials.
