Nagarbera: Choosing humanity over religion and setting an example of communal harmony, a Muslim youth performed the last rites of a Hindu man in a village named Gerua in Simlitola of Assam’s Goalpara district.
Breaking the barriers of religion that divide humanity, Syed Ali from Nabagata Simlitola assumed responsibility and cremated eighty-year-old Nagen Das according to Hindu rituals. Ali ‘loved and respected Das as his ‘own father’.
On July 21st, 2019, Ali also performed doha, a ceremony held on the tenth day of mourning after the death of a person and it culminates in feeding Brahmins, relatives and acquaintances of the departed soul. Das left behind his wife.
“He (Das) considered me as his son and I respected and looked upto him as my father for the last 25 years. He didn’t have any children and wanted me to cremate him. I fulfilled his last wish,” said Ali while speaking to TIME8. Ali performed all the funeral rituals and also invited people to attend the doha ceremony.
He added, “The people of the village cooperated with me in performing each and every ritual. Love and respect are the main essences of religion.”
