IMA Declares Black Day On April 23 Over Violence Against Health Workers

The Indian Medical Association asked the Centre to act against the violence and abuse against doctors and medical professionals across the country

In wake of the rising incidents of attacks on the healthcare workers in the country, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has issued a ‘White Alert’ to the nation.

As a part of the alert, all the doctors and hospitals across the country have been urged to light a candle as a protest and vigil on April 22nd, 2020 at 9 pm.

In a circular issued on April 20th, 2020, National President Dr Rajan Sharma stated that the IMA has maintained utmost restraint and patience in spite of extreme provocation and that doctors have been beaten up, abused, denied entry and residence as well.

The IMA said that it will observe ‘Black Day’ on April 23rd, 2020 if the government fails to act after ‘White Alert’.

“If the govt fails to enact Central Law on violence against Doctors & Hospitals even after White Alert, IMA will declare Black Day on 23rd April. All the Doctors in the country will work with black badges. Further decisions will be taken if suitable steps are not taken by the Government even after Black Day,” IMA said in a statement.

“Our legitimate needs for safe workplaces have to be met. Abuse and violence should stop immediately. White Alert to the nation – All doctors and hospitals to light a candle at 9 pm on 22 April, as protest and vigil,” the statement further added.
