    Hailakandi Woman Attempts To End Life Over Exclusion From Final NRC List

    A total of 19,06,657 persons were excluded from the final National Register of Citizens list

    A woman allegedly attempted to commit suicide by setting herself ablaze over the exclusion of her name in the final National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Hailakandi district in Assam’s Barak Valley on September 4th, 2019. The final NRC list was published on August 31st, 2019.

    The woman has been identified as Sabitri Roy of Station Road. As per information, she had set herself ablaze in the bathroom of her residence. She was rushed to the SK Rai Civil Hospital. Later, she was referred to the Silchar Medical College and Hospital in a critical condition.

    As per information, names of other family members were included in the list. “She was scared…she is living in fear after the list was published,” a local said.

    The final NRC list was released after a six-year-long process. The NRC updation was started in 2013 after the Supreme Court of India had promulgated an order. The apex court has been monitoring the whole updation procedure since then.

    A total of 3,11,21,004 persons were found eligible for inclusion in the list while a total of 19,06,657 persons were found ineligible including who did not submit claims.
